We’re back at it again – making blueberries a part of our yearly holiday celebrations! (You might recall this delightful blueberry shrub concoction from last year…which is still getting put on annual rotation – can we talk about those prosciutto wrapped blueberry garnishes btw). But this year I wanted to try something different and learn something new – so after a bit of research I decided I would take a stab at bitters.
I’ve never made my own bitters before and thought it was time to start (you know after mastering marshmallows, how difficult could it be?!) Answer – not difficult at all – in fact, so very simple…less terrifying and a lot less sticky. All you need are a few ingredients and some patience.
This blueberry bitter would be an exceptional counterpart to a variety of holiday drinks and spirits – it’s bright, just the right amount of woodsy without being overly fruity and it has a tiny hint of citrus from the orange peels. Not to mention this bitter is an easy and unexpected edible gift to bottle up for friends. I mean, if shopping for cute glass bitters bottles isn’t reason enough to try this recipe out, then I don’t know what is.
Speaking of…this one and this one are divine for holiday gifting (filled with your incredible homemade bitter that is!)
What’s even better than homemade blueberry bitters!? A cocktail recipe to match!
Blueberry and Cardamon are amazing friends in the flavor world – and what better time of year to introduce this holiday-esque spice into your cocktail game as well?! Manhattans are a classic, but this slight update gives your happy hour a festive twist that will surely be making an appearance well into the new year.
So let’s make your homemade bitter gift even better by jotting down this recipe on a cute paper tag, and maybe even wrap up a dapper copper strainer or cocktail pitcher if your recipient has been extra nice this year.
(Or maybe you just want to put these into your own stocking – no judgement here…it’s been a YEAR!)
How are we feeling about making the little blue dynamo part of your holiday routine?! Whether you shrub it…turn it into a bitter…or even make a syrup for a morning bellini or two (see below!) I’m pretty sure you’re going to see why this earthy fruity flavor is perfect for all your holiday spirits.
